Cherry Blossom is in the spirit of hanami (“flower viewing”), the Japanese custom of appreciating the coming of Spring as marked by the brilliant display of cherry blossoms. People from all walks of life spend time outdoors under the cherry trees, often drinking, talking, or playing music. In classical Japan, this celebration also became a focus of leisurely art among aristocrats. So in that, there’s a duality between rich and poor, folk music and classical music, all fundamentally humbled under the same forces of nature. Also hanamatsuri (literally “flower festival”) is the name given to the celebration of the Buddha’s birthday, usually celebrated on April 8th.

While ours is not a religious festival, the Davis Cherry Blossom Festivals has always captured the spirit of cultivating compassion through genuine human interaction. Building off the success of the last two years, Sudwerk Brewing and Bakuhatsu Taiko Dan have decided to expand this year’s Cherry Blossom festival to two days! While the roots of the festival come from our student Japanese cultural organizations at UC Davis, we want the festival to be a celebration and recognition of our community’s rich cultural and artistic diversity. This year’s two day event will feature local and traveling musicians, along with Japanese Taiko groups, on two event stages! There will be educational demonstrations and an artist’s room. Also new this year is a larger brew of the Cherry Blossom Sakura beer! The beer will available both days of the festival and is a delicious blend of floral and fruity, just in time for the coming Spring months. While admission to the festival will be FREE, this year we will be taking donations that aid Peurto Rico after the hurricanes this past summer. We felt that it was in the spirit of the festival to support those less fortunate than ourselves and promote other cultural communities around the world.
